Majestically situated on an island, the white castle recalls its time as residence of the Gottorf dukes and as the cultural centre of northern Europe. In its days even the seat of a bishop, the residence of Danish kings, later it served as barracks and a refugee camp. Today, Gottorf Castle is home to the Schleswig-Holstein State Museums of Art and Cultural History and Archaeology. Among the most important exhibits are the bog bodies in the Iron Age exhibition, and the Nydam boat. Located close to the museum island is the beautiful Gottorf Baroque Garden, once considered a botanical sensation. In its centre visitors can marvel at the famous opulent Gottorf Globe, a replica of the world's first planetarium.
