Former crossroads of the early major trade routes from Friesland to Angles and from Viborg (Denmark) to Wedel, which contributed to the town's emergence around 1100. Oldest weekly market in Schleswig-Holstein, meeting place for Flensburg residents on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. In the direction of Rote Straße is the oldest preserved secular building in Flensburg (built around 1490), today the Nikolai pharmacy.
Encircled by imposing and inspiring architecture, the public square Südermarkt is a pivot point for shopping tours in central Flensburg.
