ART AND CULTURAL HISTORY ON THE FLENSBURG FIRTH
The Museumsberg stands high above the city. It consists of two museum buildings – the Heinrich-Sauermann-Haus and the Hans-Christiansen-Haus – encompassing 3,000 m2 of exhibition space which provides a comprehensive insight into the art and cultural history of the Schleswig region between the 13th and 20th centuries. The museum buildings form a cohesive entity together with the old cemetery and Christiensen Park - an English garden built in the first quarter of the 19th century by the wealthy Flensburg merchant Andreas Christiansen (1786–1831). The so-called “Spiegelgrotte”, or Mirror Grotto, which remains intact south of the museum, is an underground neo-Gothic construction designed by several garden architects.
