Süderlügum presents itself to visitors today as a flourishing border trading town, which is not only due to its convenient location. The proximity to the border makes for special regulations regarding shop opening hours, allowing even customers from far away to visit Süderlügum for their Sunday shopping. Because of its convenient location on the route of the Ochsenweg (German: Ox Road, Danish: Army Road), Süderlügum was a sought-after trading centre aleady in ancient times. The village, first mentioned in the 12th century, used to be called Lügum. Today's municipality of Süderlügum consists of the districts of Süderlügum and Wimmersbüll, counting more than 2,000 inhabitants. While the surrounding communities are still predominantly agricultural, Süderlügum has taken over the supply and service function for this region. The disproportionately high outlets of retail trade are a very welcome consequence of the proximity to the border - for consumers as well as for the labour market.
