The Rote Straße in Flensburg is a picturesque old town street with idyllic backyards, cafés, and small shops. The fountain and the old pulleys in the Krusehof-courtyard are reminiscent of the lively hustle and bustle in the 17th and 18th centuries. Flensburg is located at the long trail of the international Oxen Road, back then the most important trade route between Denmark and northern Germany. The Rote Straße was a significant meeting point for merchants and farmers who traded potatoes, skins, and tools. Where today locals and tourists enjoy the sight and maybe a cup of coffe, the traders back in the days sealed many a good deal over a beer. Or two. The name of the street does not imply any hint of a red-light district. It is just a free and incorrect translation of the original name "Rudestraat" (Grove Street), which used to lead through a red gate, which doesn’t exist any longer, up to the Rude district.
